This twelve-day expedition provides a comprehensive loop of Kenya’s most diverse ecosystems. By starting with the iconic peaks of the south and moving through the Great Rift Valley, you conclude with the rugged, specialized wilderness of the Northern Frontier.
The Experience: Depart Nairobi for the drive south. As you enter the plains, the massive dome of Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the horizon. Focus on the park’s legendary “Big Tuskers”—massive elephants that frame perfectly against the mountain backdrop.
Highlights: Visit Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the Enkongo Narok marshes where hippos and buffalo congregate. Keep an eye on the dry lake beds for cheetahs, who often use the shimmering mirages for cover while hunting.
Overnight: Amboseli.
The Experience: Leave the mountain behind and drive north, descending the spectacular Great Rift Valley escarpment.
Activity: Enjoy a boat safari on Lake Naivasha to see hippo pods and the African Fish Eagle. Follow this with a guided walking safari on Crescent Island, where you can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests at eye level.
Overnight: Naivasha.
The Experience: Journey southwest into the world’s premier wildlife destination. Four days in the Mara allow you to move beyond the main gates and explore the Mara Triangle and the banks of the Mara River.
Highlights: Deep-dive tracking of the “Big Cats”—lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Observe the resident pods of hippos and the massive Nile crocodiles.
Culture: Visit a Maasai Manyatta (village) to learn about the ancient traditions, warrior culture, and the deep-rooted connection between the Maasai people and this land.
Overnight: Maasai Mara.
The Experience: Drive north into the Great Rift Valley to the shores of Lake Nakuru. This park is one of Kenya’s most successful conservation stories and a designated rhino sanctuary.
Highlights: Search for both Black and White rhinos and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe. Visit Baboon Cliff for a bird’s-eye view of the lake, often fringed by a pink ribbon of flamingos and pelicans.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru.
The Experience: Descend from the highlands into the rugged, ochre-red terrain of the Samburu National Reserve. The lifeblood of this reserve is the Ewaso Nyiro River, which attracts large herds of “red” elephants.
Highlights: Track the “Samburu Special Five”: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk. Look for leopards lounging in the large acacia trees along the riverbanks.
Final Day: After a final sunrise game drive, begin the journey back to Nairobi, winding through the foothills of Mount Kenya and arriving in the city by late afternoon.
Overnight: Samburu.
The Full Spectrum: Experience the transition from the southern marshes and volcanic Rift Valley to the golden Mara savannah and the semi-desert north.
The Big Ten: Check off the traditional “Big Five” alongside the specialized “Samburu Special Five” in a single journey.
Active Safari: The walking safari in Naivasha provides a refreshing, physical contrast to vehicle-based game drives.
