This fourteen-day journey is a deep expedition into the “Wild North”—a transition from the lush, high-altitude conservation havens of the Laikipia Plateau to the surreal, prehistoric landscapes of the Great Desert. Designed as a mid-range adventure, it utilizes comfortable, established lodges and authentic desert camps, providing a balance of rugged exploration and essential comforts.
The Experience: Depart Nairobi for the cool air of the Laikipia Plateau. Ol Pejeta offers the most accessible “Big Five” experience in the north and is the best place in East Africa to see both Black and White Rhinos.
Mid-Range Accommodation: Sweetwaters Serena Camp (a classic tented camp overlooking a busy waterhole) or The Stables.
Highlights: Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the world’s last two Northern White Rhinos.
Overnight: Ol Pejeta.
The Experience: Descend into the sun-baked, semi-arid plains of Samburu. Four days here allow for extensive tracking of the Big Cats along the Ewaso Nyiro River and dedicated time for the “Samburu Special Five.”
Mid-Range Accommodation: Samburu Sopa Lodge or Samburu Game Lodge (rustic, reliable lodges with great views).
Highlights: Deep tracking of the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, and Gerenuk. A visit to a local Samburu village to learn about the “Butterfly People.”
Overnight: Samburu.
The Experience: Leave the savannah behind for the stark beauty of the Chalbi. This is a journey of mirages, camel caravans, and endless horizons.
Mid-Range Accommodation: Kargi (clean, basic bandas/cottages that are the standard for this remote region).
Highlights: Spend time at the Chalbi Oasis, where freshwater springs sustain life in the desert. Enjoy a sunset on the white salt pans where the horizon disappears.
Overnight: Kargi.
The Experience: Five days at the “Cradle of Mankind.” The heat of the desert is balanced by the constant, cooling “Turkana winds” and the vibrant turquoise waters of the world’s largest desert lake.
Mid-Range Accommodation: Palm Shade Lodge (established resorts offering comfortable rooms and essential amenities like cooling pools).
Highlights: * Central Island: A boat trip to the volcanic craters within the lake.
El Molo Culture: Visit the smallest tribe in Kenya and learn their fishing traditions.
The Desert Museum: Explore the fossil history of our early ancestors.
Day 14: Final Day: Embark on the long journey back south, arriving in Nairobi by the late evening of Day 14.
