This twelve-day circuit offers a seamless flow through Kenya’s most diverse ecosystems. By starting in the rugged north and winding down through the high-altitude central plateau and the Great Rift Valley, you finish with a deep-dive immersion into the world-famous Maasai Mara.
The Experience: Depart Nairobi and head north into the ochre-red landscapes of Samburu. The lifeblood of this reserve is the Ewaso Nyiro River, which attracts large herds of “red” elephants and the rare northern species.
Highlights: Track the “Samburu Special Five” (Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk). Look for leopards lounging in the large acacia trees along the riverbanks.
Overnight: Samburu.
The Experience: Drive south into the cool, high-altitude air of the Laikipia Plateau. Ol Pejeta sits directly on the equator and is a global leader in rhino conservation.
Highlights: Visit the world’s last two Northern White Rhinos and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. With the highest predator density in the region, your chances of seeing lions and leopards are exceptional.
Overnight: Ol Pejeta.
The Experience: Descend into the Great Rift Valley to the shores of Lake Nakuru. This park is a premier sanctuary for both Black and White rhinos and is famous for its birdlife.
Highlights: Witness the thousands of flamingos and pelicans that fringe the lake. Drive to Baboon Cliff for a panoramic view and track the rare Rothschild’s giraffe in the yellow-fever acacia forests.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru.
The Experience: Journey southwest into the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Four days here allow you to move beyond the main gates and explore the Mara Triangle and the Mara River.
Highlights: Focus on tracking the “Big Cats.” Observe the massive pods of hippos and crocodiles at the river. In the late afternoon, visit a Maasai Manyatta to learn about the ancient traditions and warrior culture of the local community.
Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Morning: Leave the Mara and head to the freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha.
Activity: Enjoy a boat safari to see hippos and fish eagles, followed by a guided walking safari on Crescent Island, where you can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests.
Afternoon: Begin the final drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon to conclude your journey.
The Big Ten: This route is designed to check off the traditional “Big Five” in the Mara and Ol Pejeta, plus the specialized “Samburu Special Five” in the north.
Landscape Contrast: Experience everything from the semi-desert of Samburu to the lush highlands of Mount Kenya and the volcanic floor of the Rift Valley.
Active Safari: The walking safari in Naivasha provides a refreshing, physical conclusion to a journey primarily spent in a 4×4 vehicle.
