8 DAYS AMBOSELI, LAKE MAGADI, LAKE NAIVASHA, SAMBURU

Overview

This eight-day expedition is a masterclass in Rift Valley diversity. It moves from the massive elephant herds of Amboseli to the raw, volcanic landscapes of Lake Magadi, through the tranquil waters of Naivasha, and finally into the rugged Northern Frontier of Samburu. It is a journey for those who appreciate both the giants of the savannah and the stark, specialized beauty of Kenya’s arid landscapes.

Day by Day

Morning: Depart Nairobi and head south. As the plains open up, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro begins to dominate the horizon.

Afternoon: Enter Amboseli National Park. Spend the afternoon tracking the park’s legendary “Big Tuskers”—some of the oldest and largest elephants in Africa.

Overnight: Amboseli.

Full Day: Explore the contrasting ecosystems of Amboseli. Visit Observation Hill for a bird’s-eye view of the Enkongo Narok marshes where hippos and buffalo congregate, and scout the dry lake bed for cheetahs using the mirages as cover.

Overnight: Amboseli.

Morning: Leave the elephants behind and drive toward the southernmost reach of the Kenyan Rift. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and volcanic as you descend toward Lake Magadi.

Afternoon: Arrive at the shimmering, pink-hued soda lake. Visit the natural hot springs at the lake’s edge, where you can soak in therapeutic, mineral-rich waters while watching thousands of flamingos.

Overnight: Magadi (e.g., Lentorre or Lake Magadi Tented Camp).

Full Day: Explore the surrounding Olkirimatian and Shompole Conservancies. This area is a vital corridor for lions and leopards, set against the backdrop of the Nguruman Escarpment.

Activity: Enjoy a night game drive to see rare nocturnal species like the striped hyena or aardwolf, or take a guided walk along the Ewaso Nyiro River to see the vibrant birdlife and colossal fig trees.

Overnight: Magadi.

Morning: Ascend from the hot desert floor of Magadi back toward the cool, freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha.

Afternoon: Embark on a boat safari to see the resident hippo pods and the African Fish Eagle in action. Follow this with a guided walking safari on Crescent Island, where you can walk among giraffes and zebras without the confinement of a vehicle.

Overnight: Naivasha.

Morning: A scenic drive north, crossing the equator near Nanyuki. Watch the landscape transform into the ochre-red, rugged terrain of the Samburu National Reserve.

Afternoon: Begin your exploration of the arid north. The wildlife here is distinct, having evolved specifically for these sun-baked conditions.

Overnight: Samburu.

Full Day: Dedicate today to tracking the “Samburu Special Five”: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk.

Highlight: Spend time along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the lifeblood of the reserve, where leopards are frequently seen lounging in the large acacia trees.

Overnight: Samburu.

Morning: A final sunrise drive to capture the “red” elephants—so named for the iron-rich soil they dust themselves with.

Late Morning: Visit a Samburu village to learn about the vibrant traditions and nomadic life of the “Butterfly People.”

Afternoon: Begin the journey back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon with a spirit full of the wild North.

Safari Highlights

The Rare & Elusive: From the “Special Five” in Samburu to the nocturnal striped hyenas of Magadi, this route is a collector’s dream for rare sightings.

Landscape Contrast: Experience the polar opposites of Kenya’s geography—from the swampy marshes of Amboseli to the white salt crust of Magadi.

Photographic Light: The low-angled light of the Northern Frontier and the pink reflections of the soda lakes provide some of the best lighting conditions in the country.
