This eight-day “Grand Circuit” covers the most iconic landscapes of East Africa. From the towering silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro to the rhino sanctuaries of the Rift Valley and the predator-rich plains of the Maasai Mara, this itinerary offers a comprehensive look at Kenya’s wildlife diversity.
Morning: Depart Nairobi and head south through the typical Maasai heartland. On a clear day, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro will guide your way into the park.
Afternoon: After lunch and a short rest, set out for your first game drive. Amboseli is famous for its massive “Tuskers”—some of the largest elephants in Africa.
Overnight: Amboseli.
Full Day: Spend the day exploring the park’s contrasting landscapes, from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli to the lush green swamps of Enkongo Narok.
Highlight: Visit Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the entire park, watching herds of buffalo, hippos, and elephants congregate in the marshes below as the sun sets over the mountain.
Overnight: Amboseli.
Morning: Leave Amboseli early for a scenic drive north. You’ll bypass the city and descend into the Great Rift Valley, stopping for a breathtaking view of the valley floor and its dormant volcanoes.
Afternoon: Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in the afternoon. This park is a designated rhino sanctuary, offering one of the best chances in Kenya to see both White and Black rhinos.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru.
Full Day: Focus on the biodiversity of this alkaline lake. Look for the rare Rothschild’s giraffe and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions.
Activity: Drive to the lakeshore to witness thousands of flamingos and pelicans. Later, head to Baboon Cliff for a bird’s-eye view of the shimmering lake and the yellow-fever acacia forests surrounding it.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru.
Morning: Travel southwest across the Rift Valley floor toward the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Afternoon: Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive. The Mara never disappoints, with wildlife appearing almost immediately as you enter the gates.
Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Full Day: Explore the Mara Triangle, the western sector known for its stunning vistas and high concentration of animals.
Highlight: Visit the Mara River, the site of the dramatic Great Migration crossings. Observe the resident pods of hippos and the massive Nile crocodiles that lie in wait along the banks.
Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Full Day: With a second full day in the Mara, you have the luxury of time to track the “Big Cats.” Follow the movements of the resident lion prides or search for a leopard draped over a limb in the riverine forests.
Activity: A midday picnic under a lone acacia tree allows you to stay deep in the reserve, maximizing your time with the wildlife.
Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Morning: Begin the ascent out of the Turkana basin. The return journey offers a chance to see the changing terrain from a new perspective as you climb back toward the highlands.
Afternoon: Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon/evening, carrying the dust and
stories of the Great North with you.
The Big Three: This route offers the best probability of seeing the “Big Five” alongside the specialized Rhino populations of Nakuru and the Elephant herds of Amboseli.
Photographic Diversity: From mountain backdrops and pink-fringed lakes to the golden rolling hills of the Mara, the visual variety is unmatched.
Immersion: Four days in the Mara ensures you aren’t just “passing through,” but truly experiencing the rhythm of the African wild.
