9 DAYS AMBOSELI, LAKE NAIVASHA, MASAI MARA, LAKE NAKURU

Overview

This nine-day “Circle of the Highlands” expedition offers a masterclass in Kenyan biodiversity. From the swamp-dwelling giants of the south to the private conservancy success stories of the central plateau, this journey captures the country’s most celebrated landscapes. It is a route designed for those who want to see the famous “Big Five” alongside the world’s most protected rhinos.

Day by Day

Morning: Depart Nairobi, heading south through the heart of Maasai country. On a clear day, the snow-capped dome of Mount Kilimanjaro will guide you toward the park gates.

Afternoon: Arrive in Amboseli National Park. Set out for an afternoon game drive to find the “Big Tuskers”—huge bull elephants that wander the plains with the iconic mountain as their backdrop.

Overnight: Amboseli.

Full Day: Spend the day exploring the park’s unique wetlands. Visit Observation Hill for a panoramic view of the Enkongo Narok marshes, where hippos and buffalo congregate. Keep an eye on the dry lake beds for cheetahs, who use the shimmering mirages for cover while hunting.

Overnight: Amboseli.

Morning: Leave the mountain behind and drive north, descending the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Stop at the viewpoint for a breathtaking look at the valley floor’s dormant volcanoes.

Afternoon: Arrive at the freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha. Take a boat safari to see resident hippo pods and the African Fish Eagle. End the day with a walking safari on Crescent Island, where you can walk among giraffes and zebras at eye level.

Overnight: Naivasha.

Morning: Explore Hell’s Gate National Park. Whether you choose to cycle or hike, the towering obsidian cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop. Navigate the Ol Njorowa Gorge to see natural hot springs and narrow sandstone walls.

Afternoon: Enjoy a quiet afternoon by the lake, perhaps visiting Elsamere for high tea and a look into the “Born Free” conservation legacy.

Overnight: Naivasha.

Morning: Journey southwest through the town of Narok and into the vast, rolling grasslands of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Afternoon: After a late lunch, head out for your first game drive. Even in these first few hours, the density of predators—lions, leopards, and cheetahs—is immediately evident.

Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Full Day: Spend the day exploring the central Mara and the Mara River. Observe the resident pods of hippos and the massive Nile crocodiles that patrol the banks. Focus on the social dynamics of the resident lion prides that roam these golden hills.

Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Full Day: Head toward the Mara Triangle for a more secluded safari experience. The high grass here is a favorite hideout for leopards.

Cultural Encounter: In the late afternoon, visit a Maasai Manyatta (village) to learn about the ancient traditions, warrior culture, and the deep connection the Maasai people have with this land.

Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Morning: Depart the golden plains of the Maasai Mara and drive north. The journey takes you through the bustling town of Narok and up the Mau Escarpment before descending into the floor of the Great Rift Valley.

Afternoon: Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park. Set out for an afternoon game drive in one of Kenya’s most successful conservation havens. This is your premier opportunity to track both Black and White rhinos in the wild. Explore the yellow-fever acacia woodlands, which are a favorite haunt for the rare Rothschild’s giraffe and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions.

Overnight: Lake Nakuru.

Early Morning: A sunrise drive along the lake’s edge. Witness the “pink” shoreline crowded with flamingos and pelicans as the mist rises off the water. Head up to Baboon Cliff for a final, panoramic bird’s-eye view of the entire park and the shimmering lake below.

Late Morning: After a relaxed breakfast at the lodge, begin the final leg of your journey. The drive back to Nairobi offers one last chance to admire the dramatic walls of the Rift Valley escarpment.

Afternoon: Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon, completing your nine-day odyssey through Kenya’s most iconic wild spaces.

Safari Highlights

The Big Five & More: This route maximizes your chances of seeing the “Big Five” while adding the rarest rhinos on the planet.
