9 DAYS OLPEJETA CONSERVANCY, SAMBURU, NORTHERN FRONTIER

Overview

This nine-day odyssey is crafted for the true explorer, transitioning from the high-altitude conservation havens of the Laikipia Plateau to the stark, prehistoric landscapes of the Great North. It is a journey of shifting textures—from the green foothills of Mount Kenya to the white salt crust of the Chalbi and the volcanic jade of Turkana.

Day by Day

Morning: Depart Nairobi for a scenic drive toward the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Afternoon: Arrive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a global leader in rhino conservation. Embark on a game drive across the plains, home to the Big Five and the highest predator density in the region.

Highlight: Visit the world’s last two Northern White Rhinos in their secure enclosure and see the rescued chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Sanctuary.

Overnight: Ol Pejeta.

Full Day: Spend the day exploring the conservancy’s diverse habitats. With the equator running right through the park, the light here is sharp and vibrant—perfect for wildlife photography.

Activity: Focus on tracking the endangered Black Rhino or searching for the resident lion prides and the elusive African wild dog.

Overnight: Ol Pejeta.

Morning: Drive north, descending from the cool Laikipia Plateau into the sun-baked, ochre-red terrain of the Samburu National Reserve.

Afternoon: Your first game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River, the lifeblood that draws herds of “red” elephants to its banks.

Overnight: Samburu.

Full Day: Dedicate the day to finding the “Samburu Special Five”—rare species adapted to the arid north: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk.

Highlight: Scan the large acacia trees lining the river; this is one of the best places in Kenya to spot a leopard lounging in the canopy.

Overnight: Samburu.

Morning: A sunrise drive to catch the predators before they retreat from the heat.

Afternoon: Visit a Samburu village to learn about the vibrant traditions of the “Butterfly People.” Their intricate beadwork and resilient nomadic lifestyle offer a profound look at human adaptation to the desert.

Overnight: Samburu.

Morning: Embark on a long, adventurous drive north toward Marsabit, eventually descending into the Chalbi Desert.

Afternoon: Experience the surreal beauty of this vast, shimmering white salt pan—an ancient lake bed that creates legendary mirages.

Highlight: Visit the Chalbi Oasis, where a pocket of palms and clear water provides a vital lifeline for the Gabbra nomads and their camel caravans.

Overnight: Kargi.

Morning: Cross the desert floor and navigate the rocky volcanic fields as you approach the shores of Lake Turkana.

Afternoon: Arrive in Loiyangalani. The first sight of the vibrant, turquoise water—the “Jade Sea”—set against a backdrop of black volcanic rock is a sensory revelation.

Overnight: Loiyangalani.

Morning: Take a boat excursion to Central Island National Park, a stark volcanic island with three crater lakes, including one that is a major breeding ground for Nile crocodiles.

Afternoon: Visit the El Molo, Kenya’s smallest ethnic group. Learn about their specialized fishing culture and visit the Desert Museum to see the fossils that have earned this region its “Cradle of Mankind” title.

Overnight: Loiyangalani.

Morning: Begin the long journey back toward the highlands. The drive passes through the massive Lake Turkana Wind Power project, where hundreds of turbines spin in the relentless desert winds.

Afternoon: Wind your way back through the foothills of Mount Kenya, arriving in Nairobi by late evening, carrying the dust and the ancient spirit of the Great North.

Expedition Notes

Terrain: This is a high-adventure route. Expect long drives over a mix of paved roads, rocky volcanic tracks, and soft desert sand.

Climate: The temperatures will rise significantly as you move from Ol Pejeta into the Northern Frontier; lightweight clothing and high-SPF protection are essential.

The Experience: This itinerary is less about “standard” luxury and more about raw, unparalleled access to one of the most remote and culturally rich regions on Earth.
