5 DAYS OLPEJETA CONSERVANCY AND SAMBURU

Overview

From the lush, high-altitude plains of the Laikipia Plateau to the sun-baked, ochre-red landscapes of the Northern Frontier, this five-day journey captures the raw diversity of Kenya. It is a route designed for those who appreciate conservation success stories and the rare, resilient species that thrive in the dramatic, semi-arid wilderness of the north.

Day by Day

Morning: Depart Nairobi for a scenic 4-hour drive through the central highlands. As you pass through the productive farmlands of Nyeri, keep an eye out for the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya on a clear day.

Afternoon: Arrive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in time for lunch. Spend your afternoon on a game drive within the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. The open plains here provide excellent visibility for spotting the “Big Five.”

Evening: Enjoy the unique opportunity to see the world’s last two Northern White Rhinos in their secure enclosure—a powerful encounter with conservation history.

Overnight: Ol Pejeta (e.g., Sweetwaters Tented Camp).

Morning: Head to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where these rescued primates can be seen. Follow this with a focused search for the conservancy’s healthy populations of lions and the elusive African wild dog.

Afternoon: Spend the afternoon exploring the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which cuts through the conservancy, drawing large herds of elephants and buffalo.

Optional: For a different perspective, consider a night game drive to seek out nocturnal species like aardvarks, gorillas, and bat-eared foxes.

Overnight: Ol Pejeta.

Morning: After breakfast, drive north, crossing the equator near Nanyuki and descending into the rugged, arid terrain of the Samburu National Reserve.

Afternoon: After settling in, head out for your first game drive in this distinct ecosystem. The landscape here is characterized by doum palms, acacia woodlands, and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River.

Highlight: Begin your search for the “Samburu Special Five”—rare species found only north of the equator: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk.

Overnight: Samburu.

Full Day: Explore the twin reserves of Samburu and Buffalo Springs. Spend the morning tracking leopards, which are frequently seen lounging in the large acacia trees along the riverbanks.

Activity: Visit the river in the heat of the day to witness large “red” elephant herds bathing and drinking—the iron-rich soil gives their skin a distinct terracotta hue.

Cultural Encounter: In the afternoon, visit a Samburu village. Learn about the traditions of the “Butterfly People,” their vibrant attire, and their nomadic way of life in this challenging environment.

Overnight: Samburu.

Early Morning: Embark on a final sunrise game drive. The low-angled light hitting the volcanic outcrops and the red dust of the reserve provides a spectacular backdrop for one last wildlife encounter.

Late Morning: After a hearty breakfast, begin the journey back to Nairobi.

Afternoon: Wind your way back through the foothills of Mount Kenya, arriving in Nairobi by late afternoon with memories of the unique wild spirit of the North.

Quick Safari Tips

The Rare Five: This is the only route where you can check off the specialized northern species like the Gerenuk (the “giraffe-necked” antelope).

Conservation Focus: Visit two of Kenya’s most successful conservation hubs, focusing on rhinos, chimpanzees, and elephants.

Dramatic Scenery: Witness the transition from the green, fertile highlands to the stark, beautiful volcanic landscapes of the North.
