8 DAYS SAMBURU, CHALBI DESERT, LAKE TURKANA SAFARI

Overview

This eight-day expedition is for the true explorer, pushing beyond the familiar savannahs into Kenya’s rugged Northern Frontier. It is a journey through ancient volcanic landscapes, shimmering salt pans, and the surreal “Jade Sea”—a region where the nomadic spirit of the Samburu, Turkana, Rendille, and El Molo people remains as timeless as the horizon.

Day by Day

Morning: Depart Nairobi and head north, watching the lush central highlands transition into the semi-arid beauty of the north.

Afternoon: Arrive in Samburu National Reserve for a late afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River. This is the best time to see elephants coming to the water to bathe.

Overnight: Samburu.

Full Day: Dedicate the day to tracking the “Samburu Special Five”—the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk.

Activity: Explore the riverine forests and rugged hills. The high density of leopards in this park makes for thrilling afternoon searches among the acacia branches.

Overnight: Samburu.

Morning: Another morning game drive to catch predators at their most active.

Afternoon: Visit a local Samburu village. Engage with the “Butterfly People,” known for their intricate beadwork and vibrant red garments, to learn about their resilient way of life in this harsh environment.

Overnight: Samburu.

Morning: Embark on a long, adventurous drive further north toward Marsabit, eventually reaching the edge of the Chalbi Desert.

Afternoon: Experience the surreal, shimmering expanse of the desert—a vast white salt pan that was once an ancient lake bed.

Highlight: Visit the Chalbi Oasis, a breathtaking cluster of palms providing life-giving water to the Rendille nomads and their camel caravans.

Overnight: Kargi .

Full Day: Spend the day navigating the desert floor. The landscape is a photographer’s dream, with the white earth reflecting the brilliant blue sky and creating legendary mirages.

Activity: Spend time with the Rendille people, observing how they manage their livestock in one of the most arid regions on Earth.

Overnight: Kargi .

Morning: Leave the salt pans behind as you traverse rocky volcanic fields to reach the shores of Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake.

Afternoon: Arrive in Loiyangalani. The first sight of the lake’s vibrant turquoise waters—the “Jade Sea”—against the black volcanic rock is unforgettable.

Overnight: Loiyangalani.

Morning: Take a boat excursion to Central Island National Park. This volcanic island features three crater lakes, one of which is a significant breeding ground for Nile crocodiles.

Afternoon: Visit the El Molo, Kenya’s smallest ethnic group. Learn about their unique fishing culture and how they have adapted to life on the edge of the lake.

Overnight: Loiyangalani.

Morning: Begin the ascent out of the Turkana basin. The return journey offers a chance to see the changing terrain from a new perspective as you climb back toward the highlands.

Afternoon: Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon/evening, carrying the dust and

stories of the Great North with you.
